There are many different kinds of travelers: cranky ones who find a reason to get stressed out in any situation, curious ones who are always on the lookout for a new unforgettable experience, adventurous people who are only happy when a trip truly takes their breath away.
So what kind of traveler are you?
Amadeus, the travel technology company, has made it easier to figure out what travel means to you, with its Traveler Tribes 2023 survey. The study aims to identify four specific Traveler Tribes (or traveler types) that will emerge over the next ten years.
It’s an interesting way to tap into current sentiment about travel and determine how we’ll be traveling in the future – and it’s also a fascinating way to take a look at your own travel habits and preferences and see where you fit in. (Scroll to the bottom of this post for an infographic that summarizes the most important findings from the study.)
You can take the free survey here (click where it says “What Is Your Traveler Type?”). And here are the four unique Traveler Tribes that Amadeus has identified based on responses from more than 10,000 travelers:
- Excited Experientialists: This group have a “try it and see” approach to life. Almost half don’t live with children, enabling them to explore the world. They have a mid-to-high-income and often have jobs with flexible working options. They seek out new experiences, preferring this over materialism.
- Memory Makers: Often middle aged, this group have low-mid incomes and possess a habitual approach to travel. They prefer leveraging familiar technology, with few actively seeking out innovations. They are less likely to have changed jobs or sought out new vocational skills in the past year. Memory Makers’ motivations for travel are simple — to visit places and create memories and are less prone to adventure.
- Travel Tech-fluencers: These are today’s young business travelers, almost half of whom are under the age of 32, and three-quarters travel for business meetings. They have a moderate income and a forward-lookingperspective on life that is symbolized by how much technology they own (like VR headsets) to their use of cryptocurrency.
- Pioneering Pathfinders: Aged between 23 and 41, more than half of this group live with partners and children. Their above-average income lets them live a forward-looking, fast-paced life, always looking for their next big adventure. They are open to technology and more than half own innovations such as VR headsets, smart tech and NFTs.

During the brief quiz, you’ll be asked a series of questions about what makes you happy when you travel. Questions like what are the most important factors when you plan your next international trip (enjoying something you planned yourself, the activities you do, the environmental impact you have or the memories you make) and how you expect travel to change in the coming years. And it offers a glimpse into what Amadeus research predicts will happen to the travel industry and how we travel in the future — including the increased use of artificial intelligence and virtual reality in travel, trends in climate change and how the growth of remote working will affect travel and tourism in the coming years.
Just as importantly, the quiz asks you how those trends make you feel personally.
The quiz calculates your responses immediately and presents the results in the form of a traveler type. I, by the way, am apparently a Memory Maker. Some of the descriptive elements of that tribe surely don’t fit me, but it’s still a fascinating test, and a fun way to also learn more about the future of travel and what your vacations and business trips might be like in a few years.
