W Hotels are known for being cool. And the W Punta de Mita, a beach resort in Mexico’s chic Riviera Nayarit, is no exception. During my recent research trip to write reports for TravelAge West and Passport Magazine, I spent two nights at the hotel and found lots of things to love.
To get a fully visual view of the hotel, be sure to check out my video hotel tour of the W Punta de Mita. And here are 5 especially cool things about this Mexico beach hotel:
- The Instagram concierge. W Hotels are always rather Instagrammable, and at the W Punta de Mita, you can actually sign up with a concierge who will review your Instagram account to get an idea about your taste, and then give you a digital map with recommendations about the can’t-miss places where you should be turning your cell phone lens on.

2. Scooters. Navigating the expansive, lush property is especially fun, thanks to the hotel’s fleet of scooters, which are free to use. Gliding along the well-landscaped grounds is a fun way to inspect what’s out there.
3. Quirky, clever, colorful decor. Like most W Hotels, the W Punta de Mita has a unique style. I love the combination of indigenous Huichol artistic elements (think beautiful, multicolored beads) with cheeky modern contrasts like throw pillows emblazoned with the word “hola” and paintings of a man who looks suspiciously like Pancho Villa brandishing a surfboard and board shorts.

4. The new, second pool. As if the main hotel pool — which is a happening place, especially when a DJ is spinning — weren’t enough, the W Punta de Mita last year added a second, smaller pool, right next to the beach. The best part: it rises above the ground, with glass sides, creating yet another great place for Instagrammable photos (the pool is shaped curiously like a gigantic thermometer, although it’s hard to capture that in a selfie, unless you have a drone).
5. The gorgeous hotel spa. Most hotels don’t offer a view from spa treatment rooms. But when I got a massage, I enjoyed a view of the lush greenery outside. Even better is the spa’s outdoor area, where I waded through the beautiful hydrotherapy pools and relaxed on a chaise lounge as an attendant brought me snacks. Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy to walk away from that spa.

I could mention lots of other things I love about the W Punta de Mita: the outstanding, sophisticated cuisine (including tasty ceviche served from a vintage Chevrolet truck), the creative cocktails, tequila tasting sessions and the comfy rooms (I especially adored the view from my bathroom shower). But hey, then it wouldn’t be a list of five.
HYGIENE PRECAUTIONS: I visited during the pandemic, and was impressed with the safety protocols in place: temperature checks upon arrival, lots of hand sanitizer available and sanitary wipes available, too. Masks are required in public areas, and social distancing is encouraged. It’s up to all of us to stay safe and protect hotel employees too, so we can travel more!
