One of the most legendary states in Mexico for adventure travel, nature travel and cultural travel, Chiapas had been on my wish list for a long time. So I was thrilled when I had the opportunity to finally visit, thanks to ATMEX, the Adventure Travel Network, which recently staged its annual conference there. I found lots of amazing things to do in Chiapas, including several that I’m saving for my next visit.
In addition to my Chiapas travel video, you can also get a sample of what this fascinating state has to offer in my report in TravelAge West, Why Chiapas, Mexico Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List. And for a list of my favorite five cool things to do in Chiapas, read on.
What is Special About Chiapas?
Few other destinations in Mexico (or anywhere else, for that matter) offer the type of multifaceted immersive travel and vacation experience that you can find in Chiapas. You can learn about indigenous culture and even meet members of the community — while also appreciating the region’s unique natural beauty.
How Many Days Do You Need in Chiapas?
The more the better! The state covers more than 28,000 square miles and there are things to do in Chiapas all over the state. Figure out which destinations, activities and attractions interest you the most, and then determine travel times between each of the places you want to visit. Also, figure in the travel time to get there; most flights to Chiapas depart from Mexico City, so you’ll probably need to change planes to get there. Generally, I recommend at least five days for a rewarding vacation in Chiapas — but if you can do one or two weeks (or even more), that’s even better.
In my Chiapas travel video, I show some of the top Mexico vacation experiences in Chiapas, including visits to the legendary San Cristobal de las Casas, a designated Pueblo Magico in the highlands. If you’re interested in Mexico travel and need fresh inspiration for a truly rewarding trip, check out these ideas — and please share your favorite things about Chiapas, too!

Here’s a quick rundown of 5 cool things to do in Chiapas, based on the travel video:
1. Visit San Cristobal de las Casas
One of the top places to visit in Chiapas, this beautiful and historic town in the central highlands dates to 1528, and it’s a designated Pueblo Magico, or magical town. The historic architecture is stunning and it’s a pleasure to wander the streets, visit the landmarks and enjoy the ambiance. You’ll also want to get something to eat and visit the colorful markets in San Cristobal.
2. Connect with indigenous culture
There are lots of ways to connect with indigenous culture in Chiapas, and tour operators make it easier. After a walking tour of San Cristobal with tour operator Bioventura, we headed to the town of San Juan Chamula, where the local Templo reflects a blend of Mayan and Catholic religious traditions. Our guide described the town as the “most indigenous community in Mexico” since nearly all residents are indigenous Tzotzil Maya. A 2010 census found that more than 99 percent of residents speak the Tzotzil Maya language.
3. Learn about local arts and crafts
The creative talent in Chiapas is truly impressive, and you can support local communities by buying arts and crafts to take home. In the nearby town of Zinacatán, Bioventura took us to visit a family in their home to learn about the process of making huipiles, a traditional women’s garment, as well as other arts and crafts. It’s a fascinating and age-old tradition.
4. Sample local cuisine
During my tour with Bioventura, we sampled tasty food including tortillas made with butifarra (pork), black beans and pork rinds at the same home in Zinacatán. Wherever you are, tamales are one of the most popular dishes, and unique drinks include pozol, which is sometimes made with cacao.

5. Choose the accommodations that fit your style
There are wildly different types of accommodations and hotels in Chiapas. You can choose big hotels like the Marriott Tuxtla Guitierrez (click to see my review and video hotel tour) or for a more natural vibe, Argovia Finca Resort, a gorgeous coffee and flower plantation in the southern part of the state near the city of Tapachula. At Argovia, you can stay in a beautiful cabin, stroll the lush grounds and even swim and get a spa treatment.
The cuisine at Argovia was outstanding, and there are guided tours where you can learn about coffee production and flowers. You can even see the spot where the TV show “Naked and Afraid” was filmed! But you can keep your clothes on.
Argovia’s property is absolutely beautiful, but regardless of where you visit in Chiapas, you won’t be far from stunning natural beauty. I didn’t even have time to visit the legendary Sumidero canyon on this visit, but it’s a must-see too.
