In case you haven’t noticed, most flight attendant uniforms are boring. So I was pleasantly surprised when my fashion radar went ding during a recent layover in Mexico City’s international airport, thanks to the cabin crews of Mexico’s four largest airlines (Aeromexico, Interjet, Viva Aerobus and Volaris). Colombian carrier Avianca may still hold LatinFlyer’s title for best flight attendant uniform in the Americas, but no other nation in the western hemisphere has such an array of colorful stylishness spread across among so many airlines. This is the real runway, and these are Mexico’s hottest flight attendant uniforms.
Aeromexico: The jaunty red hat and matching red shoes and belt provide a bold accent to Aeromexico’s blue uniform, which looks especially good as a dress. The current design, which debuted in 2011, was created by Mexican designer Alejandra Quesada.
Interjet: Crisp, neat and businesslike, Interjet‘s professional look is softened by a breezy scarf graced with the airline’s cute logo. As far as I can tell, it appears to be a requirement that all female flight attendants with this carrier wear their hair pulled back.
Viva Aerobus: An interesting color choice and flattering cut on the dresses make this discount carrier’s uniforms stand out. (FYI, the real uniforms are nothing like what the women wore on the airline’s recent cheesecake calendar.)
Volaris: Vibrant lavender tones, a tiny, stylish hat and well-cut dresses make Volaris flight attendants especially attention-getting on the concourse. Vaguely similar to some Asian airlines, the Volaris flight attendant uniform is complemented by a semi-maxi-style coat. The uniform, which debuted in 2009 (check out the video of the fashion show here), was designed by Mariana Luna, a Mexico City-born designer who studied at FIT in New York City. The uniforms — which include gear for male and female pilots, male and female flight attendants, customer service agents, ramp and maintenance staff — include more than 18,000 items of clothing and were produced in just three months.
