One of the “casas gemelas” (twin houses) on Paseo de Montejo in Mérida, Yucatan. |
I just got back from a busy and multifaceted visit to the Mexican state of Yucatán, where rich Mayan, Spanish Colonial and Mexican heritage come together, with a healthy dose of Yucatecan flavor.
I spent several days in the city of Mérida, the state capital and a fascinating place for culture vultures, history fans and foodies. One of the city’s most impressive locales is Paseo de Montejo, a broad boulevard built between 1888 and 1904 to showcase the sumptuous mansions built with newfound wealth from the harvest of henequén.
Some of these gloriously detailed, neoclassic palaces were torn down in later years, but happily, several survive. I snapped photos of a few of my favorites.
