The 2014 Oscar winners will be announced on March 2. And while Latin American movies didn’t fare especially well this year (none are in the running for best Foreign Language Film), that doesn’t mean you can’t load up your device (or Netflix list) with a bunch of great Latin American films.
Below is a list of 27 movies from Latin America that were nominated for Academy Awards (all were nominated for best Foreign Language Film, except where indicated). Some of these movies helped solidify the careers of actors like Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, and director Alfonso Cuarón. I’ve also included a few of my own personal favorite movies (and if you’re into picking out faked settings for movies, check out my roundup, Destination Doubles: Do You Know Where These Movies Were Really Filmed?). So you can catch up on the Oscars before the big show.
Happy viewing!
