Will a Dominican fashion designer convince more people to visit Mexico City? That’s what some people think. Last weekend, Oscar de la Renta was named tourism ambassador for Mexico City, in a ceremony conducted by secretary of tourism Alejandro Rojas Díaz Durán.
In a press conference, de la Renta said that Mexico City is a tranquil and safe city, and “with mariachi music, you even forget that you’re tired.”
The new title was awarded as the designer presented his Resort 2012 collection at the capital’s Plaza de Toros; the new line includes cocktail dresses, casual clothing and swimwear that would certainly look cool at the swimming pools at Mexico City’s finest hotels. Dominican singer and songwriter Juan Luís Guerra was also present for the event.
In a metropolis as stylish as Mexico City, perhaps it’s fitting that one of the highest-profile designers — even if his duties are not explicit — has cast new light on this fascinating destination.
