The Museo Soumaya is more than just Mexico City’s latest tribute to the arts — it’s also an iconic architectural statement. |
Considering that Carlos Slim Helú is the world’s richest man, it’s not surprising that when he decided to create a new museum, he did it on a grand scale. This month marks the debut of Museo Soumaya, Mexico City’s newest headline-grabbing cultural institution.
The collection includes artwork ranging from old masters like Rubens to Modernist artists like Picasso and Tamayo. But just as noteworthy is the building itself — a 150-foot-high structure, covered with 16,000 hexagonal aluminum plates, was designed by architect Fernando Romero (who just happens to be Carlos Slim’s son-in-law). Yet another eye-catching reason to visit Mexico City’s upscale Polanco district.
