Road warriors and vacationers in search of a cheap Mexico flight or a fast way to travel between cities during that next Mexico vacation are increasingly seeing a trio of relatively new Mexican airlines pop up on the radar: Interjet, Volaris and Viva Aerobus. These low-fare carriers continue to expand their domestic and international route networks, bringing new options to travelers both south and north of the border.
Among the newest Mexico flight options from the three companies:
Interjet: In February, Interjet began flying from Mexico City to Miami, using an Airbus A320 aircraft with in-seat video screens and women-only bathrooms. This is the company’s second U.S. destination, after San Antonio.
Volaris: On March 29, Volaris will launch the following new routes:
• Aguascalientes-Cancun (Monday and Saturday, starting March 31)
• Bajío-Cancun (Thursdays and Sundays, starting March 29)
• Mexico City-Puerto Vallarta (Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, starting April 5)
• Guadalajara-Los Cabos (Thursdays and Sundays, starting April 1)
In the United States, Volaris already serves San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, Fresno, Las Vegas and Chicago/Midway.
Viva Aerobus: Also flying in the low-cost world is Viva Aerobus, which was founded in 2006 as a joint venture between IAMSA (a bus transportation company based in Mexico) and Irelandia (an investment company headed by the Ryan family, founders of low-cost Irish airline Ryanair). Last fall, Viva Aerobus launched nonstop flights between Monterrey and both Miami and Orlando. The carrier also flies to Chicago/Midway, Houston, Las Vegas and San Antonio.
