Limité Magazine, the online guide to lifestyle, recently picked several outstanding hotels and haciendas in Mexico, several of which are members of Starwood Hotels’ Luxury Collection (the last two are independent but are sister properties to each other). Looking for some authentically Mexican indulgence in a one-of-a-kind ambiance? Check out what these properties have to offer.
Mayan ruins, smoke-wreathed volcanoes, jungle-clad coastlines and swathes of perfect beach: when it comes to postcard-perfect vacation appeal, Mexico’s got it going on. This month, Mr. and Mr. Smith handpicked five inspiring hotels in the state of Jalisco, birthplace of tequila, mariachi and rodeos; in tiny, volcanic Colima, the legendary home of the gods; and in Yucatán, peninsular land of ancient temples and underground swimming holes.
Hacienda Santa Rosa, Yucatán
Vibrantly painted in brick red and cobalt blue, this vast one-time plantation estate is a vision of belle époque Mexicana. The stone-lined pool flows under the arches of the main house, into shady caves beneath. Looking out from the colonnaded terrace, you’re met with a sweeping panorama of manicured lawns, sprawling botanic gardens and the great green jungle beyond.

Hacienda Temozon, Yucatán
100 years ago, this was the region’s most productive estate; today, it’s one of its star hotel attractions. The 17th-century ruby-red architecture still reigns resplendent, but, in terms of service or style, it couldn’t be more up-to-date. Grandly proportioned, the rooms feature 18-foot ceilings, sprawling iron beds and cotton hammocks to curl up in after a day of jungle adventure.

Hacienda Uayamon, Yucatán
Not far from Mexico’s Caribbean coast, this historic colonial hideaway is a romantic blend of overgrown ruins and mod-con comforts. It feels as though you’re staying in a lost city, and no wonder: the hacienda was once a town in miniature. And the hammock-slung pool, with its ancient pillars towering from the water, is the most dramatic in Mexico.

Hacienda de San Antonio, Colima
Standing in the shadow of Colima’s imposing volcano, Hacienda de San Antonio boasts every-whim-met personal service and is swathed in fabulous flora. Built more than 120 years ago and decorated with style and passion, its elegant arched buildings sit serenely in a jaw-dropping landscape – grab a guide from the hacienda’s nearby ranch and go explore.

Cuixmala, Jalisco
Once the Pacific-coast home of a mega-millionaire and eco-warrior, the luxury villas and sun-kissed casitas of Cuixmala now form a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel in a sweeping nature reserve. Miles of deserted beach stretch into the distance, and the hotel’s chef can cook up whatever you like, using ingredients from Cuixmala’s farm or grounds – even the lobsters are plucked straight from the sea.
