If you want the best travel advice, ask a local. And while Cesar Zapata, general manager of the Fairfield Inn Los Cabos, may not originally hail from Los Cabos, Mexico, he’s already spent enough time there to have very definite opinions about the best restaurants and activities. In this exclusive interview, Zapata shares his knowledge (and don’t forget, you have until September 23 to win a $250 gift card from Fairfield Inn & Suites, redeemable at this hotel as well as any other Marriott International brand. Where are you from originally, and how long have you been based in Los Cabos?
I am originally from Monterrey México, and I have been based in Los Cabos almost a year — since January 16, 2012.
What do you personally like best about living in Los Cabos?
I personally like the beautiful surroundings, beautiful beaches and spectacular sunsets. I also love living in one of the safest and peaceful places in the world.
Your hotel is a few minutes walking distance from restaurants, night clubs and shopping. What are a some of your own personal favorite Los Cabos restaurants, and what are your favorite dishes?
Sunset da Mona Lisa Seafood & Italian Restaurant is one of my favorites. I always order the Pesce in Crosta di Sale, the catch of the day wrapped in a banana leaf and baked in a salt crust. Los Deseos is another excellent option for good Mexican cuisine.
Are there any surprises that first-time visitors might not expect in Los Cabos?
First-time visitors are often surprised by the variety of shopping, restaurants and hotels in the Los Cabos area. Enjoying outdoor activities is easy, due to Cabo having near perfect weather with hot sunny days and low humidity (average 350-360 days of sunny weather). Also, Cabo being on the Pacific coast of Mexico, visitors often think the beaches are not swimmable, when in fact there are many beautiful swimmable beaches where tourists flock to swim, snorkel and enjoy a number of water sports.
As someone who lives in paradise, what’s your own personal idea of an ideal day in Los Cabos?
An ideal day in Los Cabos would be, taking boat to the Cabos famous Land’s End Arch and Lover’s Beach to snorkel as you watch sea lions swimming by and laying out on the rocks.
