Hacienda Xcanatun: a luxurious hotel getaway just outside of Merida, Mexico. |
VIDEO & REVIEW BY MARK CHESNUT
The Mexican state of Yucatan is known for its many historic haciendas, several of which have been converted to luxury hotels. During one particularly enjoyable visit, I stayed at Hacienda Xcanatun, which sits just four miles from downtown Mérida. This EXCLUSIVE VIDEO provides a glimpse of what the hotel offers.
THE STYLE: Xcanatun is set in an 18th-century hacienda that has been recast as a luxury hotel, with all the service and amenities that you’d need for an exceptionally upscale stay. The conservative decor and style is a fitting complement to the beautiful architectural details of the original hacienda, with comfortable furnishings and lovely design elements throughout.
THE AMENITIES: The high-ceilinged restaurant, Casa de Piedra, is a gourmet hotspot that attracts locals and visitors alike (I especially liked the lime soup and salmon filet, followed by a heavenly vanilla creme brulee). The hotel also has a spa, an outdoor swimming pool and lots of lush, shady gardens that are perfect for strolling and contemplation.
Guest rooms are spacious, with high ceilings and amenities including air conditioning, ceiling fans, mini bars, safes and hair dryers (the bathroom in my room had a wonderful skylight). Some rooms have canopy beds and some have sitting areas furnished with antiques.
BEST FOR: Travelers seeking luxury and a bit of a historical vibe, while still remaining close to the city of Mérida (this is the closest hacienda hotel to downtown, so it offers easy access to lots of attractions and activities — which also makes it a good option for business travelers who are tired of chain hotels). The service and amenities are indulgent, while the ambiance is tranquil and relaxing. $260 and up.
