During my most recent visit to Quito, Ecuador, I was a guest for three nights at Patio Andaluz, a hotel in the historic city center. This is a review of my experience.
THE STYLE: Located just two blocks from the lovely Plaza Independencia, one of the city’s main squares in the historic city center, Hotel Patio Andaluz is set in a former residence that dates to the late 16th century. Soaring arches and two large, covered atriums are among the most striking design elements, with lots of natural light during the daytime in the interior public areas. Service was attentive and friendly, with lobby staff dressed in traditional garb that fits in well with the ambiance.

THE GUEST ROOMS: There are a lot of unique variations on guest room layouts at Patio Andaluz (with a total of 11 suites and 21 standard rooms), thanks to the fact that this is a historic home not originally designed to be a hotel. I stayed in room 217, a decent size space in the back atrium, with a double bed, TV, couch and antique-style furnishings including a small work desk. Among the features I liked best: free WiFi, a comfy bed with lots of pillows, air conditioning and heat (although you likely won’t need either one), and two bottles of waters provided free every day in the bathroom. For a splurge, you might opt for the two-level, one-bedroom suite.

HOTEL FEATURES: Hotel Patio Andaluz is dotted with lots of very inviting public seating areas, with large couches, chairs and tables (including a couple chess sets). The restaurant, El Rincón de Cantuña, is located in the first atrium, and serves an ample breakfast buffet (which may be included with your room rate, depending on the deal you get), as well as lunch and dinner with plenty of Ecuadorian specialties. A large upscale boutique in the lobby stocks attractive arts and crafts.
