A cancelled flight to Córdoba left me with an extra 12 hours to kill in Buenos Aires. Luckily, LAN Airlines was good enough to provide me with a hotel room where I could crash for a while, thereby also giving me the opportunity to check out a hotel property I’d never visited before: NH City & Tower.
Set in a lovely older building in the heart of the city center, this 369-room property has been attractively updated with modern furnishings, original artwork and 21st-century amenities including complimentary Internet access in every guest room (a feature I especially like; my biggest pet peeve is when expensive hotels charge extra for WiFi). Like many older city hotels, my room was small and oddly shaped, with a view of another wall of the building. But the bed was comfortable, the room attractive and the bathroom heavily marbled.
The NH City & Tower has a small fitness center on the top floor, and a small outdoor rooftop pool that offers great views (and photo opportunities) of downtown Buenos Aires. The location is ideal for tourists, as it’s just a few steps from the Casa Rosada and other downtown attractions (although one taxi driver warned me that the hotel’s location close to the capital building means that political demonstrations and rallies sometimes block traffic, making vehicular access to the hotel a bit more difficult). Overall, this is a hotel I would consider spending my own money on; given its mid-range price, it has decent amenities and style, and a central location.
BEST FOR: First-time vacationers looking to be within walking distance of the tourist sites downtown including the Casa Rosada, and business travelers with meetings downtown.
