During my recent trip to Panama City, Panama, I was a guest at one of the city’s newest hotels: the 92-room TRYP By Wyndham Panama Centro, which opened this year in the popular El Cangrejo district. Here are my impressions.
THE STYLE: Crisp, clean and comfortably contemporary, this newly built hotel is airy and pleasant, with lots of natural light entering the lobby through floor-to-ceiling windows. The location, in the heart of the popular El Cangrejo district, is a big selling point, since it’s walking distance to some offices, casinos, nightlife, shopping and restaurants.
THE GUEST ROOMS: We stayed in a corner suite with two full bathrooms, two flat-screen televisions and two safe deposit boxes. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in lots of light. The bathrooms are well equipped, with a better-than-average selection of amenities including toothbrush, toothpaste, sewing kit, shaving kit and comb (in addition to the usual shampoo, conditioner and lotion). The empty mini-fridge is especially good for travelers who want to stock up with their own purchases.
AMENITIES & SERVICES: The small rooftop pool and hot tub is a pleasant place to spend time and gaze at the view of Panama City’s ever-growing skyline, while the nearby gym is small but well-equiped, and also offers inspiring views. The final touches were still being placed on the spa when I visited; it already has a steam bath and sauna and will soon offer massage and other spa treatments. Free WiFi (in guest rooms and public areas) as well as a free hot breakfast buffet are nice pluses, and the on-site lobby bar/restaurant serves reasonably priced lunch and dinner, as well as equally well-priced happy hour drinks. (If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the torrijas for dessert — they are addictive.)
BEST FOR: The reasonable room rates — I found standard rooms online for less than $90 a night — make this Panama City hotel an ideal choice for travelers looking for value, an excellent location, multiple free amenities and clean style. I’ve stayed at something like 10 different hotels in Panama City over the past few years, and the TRYP by Wyndham Panama Centro, in my opinion, offers the best combination of price, features and location. And since the TRYP brand belongs to Wyndham Worldwide, travelers who are members of Wyndham Rewards can also up their account by staying here.
