During my recent trip to Guadalajara, I was a guest at the Hotel Demetria, a modern boutique hotel that’s located in a popular upscale neighborhood in Mexico‘s second-largest city. Here’s a review of my experience at this super cool Mexico hotel.
THE STYLE: Glass and concrete are key materials in the architecture of this sleek and stylish Guadalajara hotel. The property is attached to a classic former home designed by 20th-century architect Luis Barragán, in the upscale Lafayette neighborhood.

You may think you’ve accidentally stepped into an art gallery when you enter, since the main lobby is starkly minimalist, with no furnishings except for a centrally placed, gigantic wooden canoe. There is a seating area behind the reception desk, however. Every floor has a unique piece of art or visual focus, and it’s not uncommon to find magazines about art, photography and fashion in various places around the property, just waiting for you to start browsing.
THE GUEST ROOMS: Nearly every room at Hotel Demetria seems to be unique. I stayed in Room 801, which has two double beds, black walls and dramatic recessed lighting. A small seating area was furnished with a variety of artsy magazines, and there is a lovely writing desk and large framed photography propped against one wall. The galley-style bathroom has a closet area with safe deposit box, a large stone sink, a water closet and a spacious stone shower.

HOTEL FEATURES: The Hotel Demetria is well equipped with a variety of amenities, including a rooftop swimming pool, a 24-hour fitness center, restaurant and bar. One of my favorite features is the second-floor bookstore, which is packed with dozens of beautiful art books. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s a good place to stop on your Guadalajara shopping tour.
The hotel also has space for private events and meetings, including inside the original Barragán home, the restaurant and the bookstore area.
This Guadalajara hotel’s location is conveniently close to a variety of upscale and trendy dining options, and about 15 or 20 minutes by car from the historic city center.
