During my recent trip to Puerto Rico with my husband to see his family, we stayed at Boho Beach Club, a relatively new hotel in Boqueron, the laidback beach vacation destination on Puerto Rico’s west coast. This is a review of our experience.
THE STYLE: Formerly known as the Boqueron Beach Club, the recently revamped Boho Beach Club is, in my experience, the hippest and most attractively decorated small, mid-priced hotel I’ve seen in Cabo Rojo. The lobby is clean white, and opens into the stylish restaurant Kaleo, which is graced with eye-catching chandeliers and lighting. You’ll know you’re in a Puerto Rico beach destination the moment you board the elevator, which is decorated with a giant wrap of Playa Sucia, a beach in nearby Cabo Rojo.
HOTEL ROOMS: We stayed in room 415, an amply sized accommodation where the king-sized bed immediately attracts attention, with its dramatic mosquito netting and multicolored pillows. The décor was equally pleasing in the room, with contemporary photography (the artsy kind that makes you wonder where it’s from) and an attractive chair and lamp. Additional noteworthy features include an empty mini-fridge (which we love, since you can fill it with whatever you want, rather than being overcharged for what a hotel thinks you need). Two packets of coffee are included for free every day; any additional packages cost $3. The flatscreen, wall-mounted television featured various streaming services. We paid a bit more to upgrade to this room, so that we could also have a balcony that overlooked the street. The bathroom was small and not as stylish, but clean and serviceable, with a sink and closet area separate from the toilet and shower.
Here’s something that really excited me about Boho Beach Club: The management is currently restoring three vintage Airstream campers, and will soon start offering them as an alternative to standard hotel rooms.
HOTEL FEATURES: This Cabo Rojo hotel has a rather large swimming pool and a very attractive bar and restaurant, where we enjoyed dinner from an extensive menu that includes mahi mahi tacos, octopus, lobster ravioli and macaroni and cheese with pulled pork. On Saturday and Sunday, we noticed the restaurant was quite full for what is supposedly an excellent brunch, but we didn’t get a chance to try it.
Boho Beach Club is about a 10-minute walk to downtown Boqueron, where lots of restaurants, small shops and bars await. The town’s lovely beach is about the same distance.
ROOM RATES: About $128 and up.
BEST FOR: Travelers looking for a comfortable, mid-priced hotel in Boquerón, Puerto Rico, with a more stylish and trendy touch than most hotels here offer. I’d definitely stay here again, and I really want to try out one of those Airstream campers!
