LatinFlyer.com contributing writer and travel expert Ramsey Qubein recently paid a visit to the Barcelo Lina hotel in the Dominican Republic’s capital city. Here is his review.
Arrival Experience: Set between the older and newer parts of Santo Domingo, this business hotel is convenient for corporate travelers, overnighting visitors with cruise departures the next day, and value-oriented tourists. Chrome pillars and plush seating areas in the lobby welcome arrivals from the frenetic city scene just outside the front door. Friendly smiles and efficient service are hallmarks of the hotel’s staff.
Dining: On the ground floor adjoining the piano bar is a buffet restaurant with an international menu and mirrored glass decor. A hearty selection of Dominican favorites provides guests with an opportunity to sample the local flavor within the comfort of the hotel, an appreciated option that many business hotels tend to overlook. Barcelo does a good job with this effort across its hotel network.
Accommodations: Rooms show tropical trimmings, bright fabrics and colorful printed spreads, all beneficiaries of the recent remodel. Large flat-screen TVs, wireless high speed Internet, refrigerators, safes, and spacious work desks are in all rooms. Coffeemakers are complemented by local Dominican coffee grounds, another opportunity for business travelers to sample local specialties even when on a short trip. Executive rooms on the top two floors are the most recently updated, and feature access to a private lounge for breakfast and all-day snacks. Perhaps the best feature of these rooms is the rooftop lounge with comfortable seating areas, a whirlpool, and fabric tent that is perfect for evening soirees.
Leisure Fun: This is a reliable choice in the heart of the city for business travelers, but leisure travelers are not forgotten. Set apart from the public areas, the resort-style section of the hotel features sunken lounge chairs in the water, splashing fountains, cushioned chaises longues, and poolside service.
The Verdict: With a reliable product at excellent prices, the Barcelo Lina proves to be a winner in Santo Domingo, just like its vacation-minded brethren elsewhere in the country.
Best For: Single travelers with business in the area, but perfectly suitable for families and sightseeing couples.
$92.40 and up.
