As one of the largest cities in the world, Mexico City is home to a wide array of hotels that cater to a variety of tastes and budgets. Along the iconic Paseo de la Reforma boulevard, one of the most legendary and long-standing luxury hotels is the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel. During my most recent stay, I discovered some of this Mexico City hotel’s biggest selling points.
Here are the top 5 reasons I recommend the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel (and you can also check out my short travel video hotel tour on my YouTube channel):
- The Location: Sitting on a prime piece of real estate along the impressive Paseo de la Reforma, the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel offers an enviable location, just steps from the U.S. embassy and a variety of restaurants. You can walk right out of the main entrance and take a stroll along the wide boulevard by day or night, and it’s especially pleasant on Sundays, when much of the avenue is closed off to motorized traffic so that pedestrians, joggers and cyclists have more room to get some exercise.
2. The View: The location of this Mexico City hotel also makes for memorable views, especially if you get a room facing Paseo de la Reforma. Quite simply, there is no other hotel that offers this good a view of the legendary Angel de la Independencia (Angel of Independence), a massive monument that commemorates Mexico’s independence. If you’re looking for hotels with a view in Mexico City, this is a memorable option.

3. The Entertainment: I don’t always recommend hotel bars for entertainment, but the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel recently celebrated the reopening of Bar Jorongo, a nightspot that was well known after first debut in the 1970s. Today, it’s a comfy and convenient place to sit back, sip a drink and enjoy a live mariachi performance. We witnessed a lively show by the super talented group called the Mariachi Embajadores de México (Mariachi Ambassadors of Mexico). At most Mexico City hotels, you need to travel somewhere off property for authentic, traditional entertainment. But at this hotel, it’s right on site.
Also worth noting about entertainment: an array of restaurants and bars are within walking distance of the hotel, and just across Paseo de la Reforma is the Zona Rosa, an especially lively nightlife district that’s especially famous for its LGBTQ bars and clubs. So if you’re an LGBTQ travel aficionado and are looking for an upscale, full-service and internationally branded hotel that’s close to the gay bars (but not so close you’ll hear any noise), the Sheraton is a good choice (plus, you can accrue or use your Marriott Convoy points).
4. The Food: The Sunday brunch at the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel is not to be missed. We savored a broad array of tasty and diverse dishes. My favorites included the arroz cremosa con verduras (creamed rice with vegetables), chamorros al pibil (Yucatecan style pork), the variety of seafood offerings and the sumptuous dessert table, which was graced with international delicacies from cake pops and suspiro limeño to cróquembouche and chocolate-covered alfajores.
I normally wouldn’t expect much from bar food. But I must also praise the mouthwatering aspects of the offerings at
Bar Jorongo, where the mariachi show was complemented by a massive array of tasty Mexican dishes, including fresh cheeses, birria tacos and torta ahogada (literally, a “drowned sandwich” that’s popular in Guadalajara).

5. The Price: If you want to, you could easily spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars a night on a hotel on Paseo de la Reforma; the boulevard, after all, is home to some of Mexico City’s biggest luxury hotels. But it’s easy to get a room rate that’s under $200 at the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel. And you still enjoy a prized location and a range of amenities, including room service, a rooftop swimming pool, fitness center and delicious cuisine.
