If you want to understand the true creativity of a city, look in the streets.
I recently took yet another amazing trip to Buenos Aires, on assignment to do a cover story for TravelAge West. During that trip, I turned to Borello Travel & Tours, a New York City-based travel company that specializes in South America vacations, to get ideas about how to see the city from a new angle. They set me up with a bunch of great Buenos Aires tours. And one of them focused exclusively on vibrant street art.

ARGENTINA TRAVEL TIPS: Inside Argentina’s Sexiest Tango Show

The tour itself was led by Grafittimundo, an organization that offers street art tours, art workshops and manages a variety of art-related programs and events. Our guide was Lucrecia, who walked us around the neighborhoods of Colegiales and Palermo Hollywood. And she did more than just point out the colorfully decorated buildings and creative works of art; she also told us about the history of street art, and how it was impossible to expressive oneself for many years during the dictatorship (public expressions of art like these weren’t fully possible in Argentina until the 1990s). Putting art into a sociopolitical perspective provided even more insight into the fascinating works that we viewed.
After walking for a while, we got in a van for a quick transfer to Galería Union, a small gallery that opened in 2014 to exhibit and sells urban art by local artists. The gallery also hosts workshops that focus on stencils, silkscreening, engraving and T-shirt design. It’s a great place to pick up some original artwork to take home.

Our final stop was at Hollywood in Cambodia, an art gallery located behind of a drinking spot called Post Bar. Operated by five artists, Hollywood in Cambodia displays an impressive array of artwork that’s decidedly influenced by the traditions of street art and graffiti.
