The coronavirus pandemic has grounded nearly everyone, and as we’re quarantined at home, many of us are finding plenty of time to daydream (which can be a good thing, since fantasizing about something pleasant like travel can provide a welcome escape from the stress of the current reality). To that end, I’ve been finding myself thinking about some of the most amazing hotels in Mexico that I’ve visited in recent years. I’m sharing some of my favorites with the hope that these can provide inspiration for your next dream vacation in Mexico — and a welcome break from the situation we’re living in today.
Choosing the right hotel is a key part of planning any Mexico vacation, whether you’re planning on a cultural getaway in the city or simply some indulgent time relaxing on a sun-soaked Mexico beach. When you love where you stay, you’re more likely to love your vacation, too. Here are six great Mexico hotels that make me go “wow” — and they may have the same effect on you, too (needless to say, I’ve stayed in every one of these hotels and would gladly do so again).
Las Brisas Acapulco
You don’t always have to spend a lot of money to enjoy outstanding accommodations. Set atop a a hill overlooking Acapulco Bay, this legendary resort hotel has hosted top celebrities from various generations — from Brad Pitt to Liza Minelli to Neil Armstrong. No other hotel is like Las Brisas Acapulco — guests ride in pink-and-white Jeeps up the hill to their private casita-style rooms, most of which have private swimming pools (not a plunge pool, an actual swimming pool) with spectacular views. Other Mexico beach destinations have taken over Acapulco’s former role as the go-to spot for the rich and famous, which has made Las Brisas an even more attractive hotel for the value/price ratio.
Imanta Resorts Punta de Mita
A perfect blend of nature and luxury, Imanta Resorts Punta de Mita is set in a picturesque corner of Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit. Even the standard jungle view suites are spacious, measuring an impressive 1,900 square feet and decorated with natural wood and outdoor showers. I had one of my most memorable spa experiences ever at Imanta, at the open-air Jungle Spa, set in a secluded, shady spot near the beautiful beach.
The St. Regis Mexico City
Mexico City is home to a variety of incredibly luxurious hotels, and The St. Regis Mexico City is, by many measures, the swankiest. Set in a modern high-rise that towers over the prestigious Paseo de la Reforma boulevard, this hotel features stylish dining options including La Table Krug, a venue created in partnership with Moët Hennessy that hosts just 12 guests at a time.
Secrets The Vine Cancun
Of all the hotels where I’ve stayed in Cancun, Secrets The Vine Cancun provided one of my most unforgettable stays, thanks to the gorgeous master suite with corner balcony and inspiring views. This adults-only, all-inclusive Mexico beach hotel also offers a diverse array of excellent cuisine, including a “Sip, Savor & See” option that allows guests to sample the culinary delights at nearby resorts that also belong to the AMResorts portfolio.
Live Aqua Urban Resort San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is known for its array of sumptuous luxury hotels, and the newest is the Live Aqua, which provides a design-conscious oasis just outside of the tourist-heavy downtown. I love the blend of traditional and contemporary decor, including dramatically arched columns complemented by modern art, while the excellent, celebrity-chef driven cuisine satisfies the palate and the spa offers a rewarding space for rejuvenation.
Hilton Mexico City Reforma
Views always impress me. So I couldn’t help but say “wow” the first time I walked into a suite at the Hilton Mexico City Reforma, which is centrally located downtown, near offices as well as some of the city’s most legendary attractions. Parque Alameda, the historic park, as well as the Torre Latinoamericana, a landmark mid-century high-rise were visible outside my window, and the large windows and spacious accommodations allowed for lots of great photo opportunities — as did the equally excellent view from the attractive club level lounge.
