Puerto Vallarta is an amazing place to eat. I’ve covered that idea already in earlier posts, including my roundup of 6 Great Restaurants in Puerto Vallarta and also in an article I wrote for TravelAge West, Puerto Vallarta Restaurants Loved by Locals.
But I can’t stop raving about the food and restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. And during my last visit, I was invited to join an excursion with Vallarta Food Tours, which offers three different guided eat-around tours of Puerto Vallarta. I joined the Original Downtown Tour, which lasts between three and 3.5 hours. It’s a fun way to see the city, and a filling and satisfying way to experience authentic Mexican food that ranges from outdoor taco stands to sit-down restaurants.

DON’T MISS: Hit the Road: 5 Great Rental Car Road Trips in Mexico

We began our tour at Robles Birria Tacos, a traditional taco stand where the specialty is slow-cooked meat stew, marinated in aromatic red chiles and served in tacos. Also in the delicious street-food category is El Cuñado, a taco stand that serves tasty carne asada tacos. I also enjoyed our stops at El Guero, a family-owned restaurant that serves super-fresh ceviche, and La Gloria Tortilla Factory, where you can watch tortillas being made and taste them fresh off the conveyer belt. At Mama Rosa, I loved the delicious soup, and at Gaby’s Restaurant, we enjoyed sampling moles from two different regions of Mexico, along with a tasting of Tequila. My sweet tooth was more than satisfied at Xocodivas, an upscale sweet shop that specializes in desserts made with the Mexican cacao bean.
