Everyone knows that Mexico vacations can be filled with time relaxing on beautiful beaches, exploring historic attractions and savoring mouthwatering Mexican food. But there’s a lot more to see and experience than that.
During the recent Adventure Travel Mexico convention in Veracruz, I spoke with a bunch of tour operators, hoteliers and assorted experts from the Adventure Travel Trade Association. I came back with a bunch of rather surprising activities that I’d never considered doing in Mexico before.
So before you finalize plans to spend all your time at that all-inclusive resort, consider these surprising things to do in Mexico:
1. Sand Surfing in Sonora: Nauchi Sandboards, based in the city of Hermosillo, leads four-hour guided sand surfing trips in Playa de San Nicolas. The company also sells the latest boards and equipment to take home.
2. Orchid Sniffing in Veracruz: The protection and cultivation of more than 350 species of orchids is the razón de ser for Orquídeas Museo & Jardín, which — following 40 years of working behind the scenes — opened to the public in late 2010 in the town of Coatepec.
3. Drooling over Chocolate in Tabasco: At Hacienda La Luz, one of the first plantations in the state of Tabasco to industrialize cacao production, visitors can learn more about sweet treats at the Museo del Cacao y el Chocolate (the Museum of Cacao and Chocolate).
4. Worshipping Soccer Stars in Pachuca: Futbol — soccer — is a national passion in Mexico, and at the Mundo Fútbol y Salón de la Fama (the World Soccer Museum and Hall of Fame), fans can compare their skills with legendary players from around the world through interactive exhibits and enjoy big-screen excitement at a 3D movie theater.
5. Learning from Ancient Cultures, All Over the Place: The Red Indígena de Turismo de México, a tourism network of indigenous tour operators, makes it easy to find a variety of interesting and enriching activities, including Teotihuacán ceremonies next to ancient pyramids in Mexico state, visits to a traditional medicine clinic in Oaxaca and presentations about language and indigenous clothing in Puebla.
