Award-winner: The Four Seasons Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, in Costa Rica. |
My recent listing of some of the most award-winning Mexico hotels got so many hits that I decided it’s time to cast our admiring gaze toward Central and South America. After scouring the lists of hotels that have consistently won awards from the likes of the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List, Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards and other noteworthy ratings, I’ve put together this summary of the top five best hotels.
So here they are, fellow travelers: the top hotels in Central and South America.
Alvear Palace Hotel, Buenos Aires
A member of Leading Hotels of the World, the Alvear Palace is decidedly traditional in style, with sumptuous Empire, Louis XV and Louis XVI style running throughout the property. Travelers looking for a contemporary approach, but with the same Alvear attention to detail, should stay tuned for the 2012 opening of the Alvear Art Hotel.
Four Seasons Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo
Graced with two beaches, a spa, championship golf and lots of scenic vistas, this luxury resort is set in Costa Rica’s hottest destination for upscale travel.
Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, Peru
This 85-bungalow hotel is set on 12 acres criss-crossed with stone pathways, conveniently close to the Machu Picchu Pueblo and, of course, the famed ruins.
Llao Llao Luxury Hotel & Resort, San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina
Located on one of the lower mountains within the Nahuel Huapi National Park, this Patagonian prize is scenic and indulgent, with an 18-hole golf course, marina, beach and spa.
Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt Buenos Aires
The Recoleta district is home to more than its share of upscale attractions, and the Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt is one of them. Hyatt aims to unite belle-epoque elegance with tech-savvy modernity and comfort — and, in the opinion of most reviewers, succeeds.
