Horse-drawn carriages have long been a scenic way to tour Guadalajara. But there’s another way that’s just as fun, and more animal friendly: horseless carriages.
First launched in 2017, horseless carriages are a memorable way to take a tour of Guadalajara. In my latest Mexico travel video, I show what the experience is like.

We paid about $15 for a one-hour ride, although you can opt for a shorter, 30-minute tour. The carriage is quite comfortable, with wide seats, curtains and even a heart-shaped back window that makes it especially good for Instagram travel photos.
The calandria tour includes live narration by the driver — if you want it. But if you don’t speak Spanish, you may want to ask around to make sure you find a driver who speaks English.
The ride starts in downtown Guadalajara, passing by some of the city’s most interesting and historic sites, including the Teatro Degollado and the Guadalajara cathedral. The advantage of taking the one-hour tour is that you also get to leave the historic downtown and see a bit more of the city — including Americana, one of the most interesting upscale neighborhoods in Guadalajara.
In addition to passing by some of the gorgeous mansions that line the streets of Americana, we also passed by the Templo Expiatorio, a gorgeous church that dates to 1897.

While this is definitely not an in-depth, expert-led tour of Guadalajara, it’s a relaxing and pleasant way to see a bit of the city, enjoy the usually pleasant climate and relax with friends, family or your loved one. There are lots of fun things to do in Guadalajara, and this is one of the most enjoyably relaxing that I’ve experienced yet.
