On my most recent trip to Mexico City, Mexico, my partner and I flew Delta Air Lines using SkyMiles awards. Here’s a review of the experience, and what you might expect when flying Delta between Mexico City and New York City (and don’t forget you can read detailed airline flight reviews for a variety of airlines and routes in LatinFlyer’s Airline Review section — remember, not all airlines are created equal!).
THE ROUTE: Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (3 hours, 47 minutes), Boeing 757-200, economy class.
THE AIRPORT: After a wonderful week in Mexico City, Mexico, we took a taxi to Mexico City airport’s Terminal 2, which hosts flights for Delta, Skyteam partner Aeromexico and other carriers. The terminal is smaller and newer than Terminal 1, and has a decent array of rather unique shops compared to most airports — ranging from museum shops to local design stores and even a shop devoted to lucha libre wrestler memorabilia (check out my review of some of the most interesting shopping at Mexico City airport’s Terminal 2). There was also an interesting temporary exhibit of bronze sculptures of winged humans, “Raza de Bronce,” by artist Jorge Marín, which are on display through May 2014 (I’ve taken the liberty of including some photos of these impressive artworks here, in addition to the usual airplane pictures). If you’re hungry at Terminal 2, keep in mind that the largest number of dining options are outside the security area, in a rather sizable food court, as well as two Wings restaurants. Inside, one of the popular stops (especially for the free WiFi) is Chili’s — this is an airport, after all.
Since I’m just wrapping up a one-year gold SkyMiles membership (I’ll be silver for 2014, unfortunately), we were able to make use of the Sky Priority check-in lane, which was fast and attentive. The security processing was equally fast, and we were not required to remove shoes. For some reason, our flight did not appear on the departure screens in the airport, but it did depart on schedule from the gate that the agent had written on our boarding passes.
THE AIRCRAFT: The Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-200 had first and economy class sections.
THE SERVICE: Here’s a rundown of features and services in the economy class cabin:
Pillows and Blankets on Airline Seats: No
Airline Seating: We sat in the Economy Comfort section, with above-average legroom but no wings on headrests.
Free Airline Food: Yes — Delta’s free airline meals included a cold sandwich, served early during the flight, and an additional snack (peanuts, pretzels or Biscoff cookies) served about an hour before landing.
Free Booze: No
In-flight Entertainment: Seatback screens with a good variety of free movies, HBO, Showtime and TV channels.
WiFi: Available for a charge while flying over U.S. airspace.
