The National Supreme Court building in Brasilia, from the June 2010 issue of Wallpaper.
To create the current issue of Wallpaper, the style-conscious, globally minded British magazine, management tried a bold experiment: They temporarily moved their staff out of England and set up shop in Brazil, producing the entire magazine (and current Web content) on-site.
Wallpaper has always been effusive in its affection for Brazil’s modernist style, and this issue — dubbed “Born in Brazil/Nascida no Brasil” — gives the staff a chance to indulge even more. The result is an impressive compendium of articles, photos and videos that highlight design, interiors, fashion, art and trends in giant cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as well as smaller gems including Paraty, Bahia and Búzios.
For Brazil-bound travelers, the issue also serves as an excellent travel guide, keeping jet-setters in the know about what they shouldn’t miss. Among my favorite elements on the Website is an interactive map of Brasilia http://www.wallpaper.com/architecture/brasilia-in-pictures-50-great-buildings-50-years/4553 , the nation’s architecturally fascinating modernist capital, with information about and photos of 50 noteworthy buildings.
Brazil’s forward-thinking style was also featured in the April 2010 issue of Architectural Digest, with a beautiful photo spread and article about a strikingly modernist, 11,840-square-foot home in Curitiba designed by Marcos Bertoldi (following up on a similar feature about another of his Curitiba luxury homes from last year).
