Founded in 1709, the city of Chihuahua, Mexico, may not be at the top of most travelers’ bucket lists. But it’s a rewarding place to explore history, culture, cuisine and nature. MEXICO TRAVEL TIPS: Where is Pancho Villa’s Head? (And How Does That Affect Your Mexico Vacation?)

You’ll find a mix of architectural styles here, in this spread-out city. Colonial religious structures contrast with neoclassical and other elegant forms of 19th and 20th-century architecture that reflects the wealth that some local residents have enjoyed over the decades. Chihuahua was even a hometown for the legendary Pancho Villa, and you can admire the elegant architecture of one of Pancho Villa’s former homes from the inside. Strikingly modern architecture creates even more contrast — as viewed in a local university campus and in a few random storefronts.
